NFL WEEK 9 · BETTING PREVIEW
Rams vs. Commanders Betting Preview: Why I’m Sticking With Los Angeles -5.5
Game date: November 8, 2026 · 1 p.m. EST

I’m sticking with the Rams -5.5, but this is a pick I questioned almost immediately. Laying that many points on the road against Jayden Daniels is uncomfortable, particularly when Los Angeles has not always looked convincing even in victory.
My reason for staying with it is simple: I think the Rams are the better team, and I’m not ready to buy back into Washington after another encouraging performance. The Commanders have shown enough ability to make that tempting. Too often, the important moments have gone the other way.
Los Angeles enters 4–4 and Washington 2–4–1. Kickoff is Sunday, November 8, at 1 p.m. EST in Washington’s home game. At 2:57 p.m. EST on November 2, ESPN’s DraftKings market listed Rams -5.5 at -110 with a total of 47.5. That is the dated number behind this preview. I don’t love a play on the total and am not selecting one. [1]
The clearest Rams advantage is finishing possessions
The Rams average 24.3 points and allow 21.0 through eight games. Washington averages 22.7 and allows 26.0 through seven. That favors Los Angeles overall, but it does not automatically translate into a six-point road victory. [2–3]
Third down gives a more specific reason to prefer the Rams. Their offense has converted 41 of 96 attempts, or 42.71%, while their defense has allowed 33 of 102, or 32.35%. Washington’s offense is at 30 of 94, or 31.92%, and its defense has allowed 41 of 96, or 42.71%. [2–3]
Those are different denominators, and they measure opportunities rather than games. The pattern still matters: Los Angeles has been better at extending its own drives and ending opponents’ possessions.
The red-zone comparison is even sharper. The Rams turn 70.97% of their trips into touchdowns and allow touchdowns on 42.86% of opponents’ trips. Washington’s corresponding figures are 52.63% on offense and 79.17% allowed. [2–3]
That is the matchup I keep coming back to. If the Rams reach scoring territory, Washington has not consistently forced them to settle for field goals. Conversely, Los Angeles has limited opponents’ touchdown conversion. Not every non-touchdown possession ends in a field goal, but keeping opponents out of the end zone is valuable when trying to create separation.
Why I still have doubts about Los Angeles
The Rams have won two straight: 35–21 at Las Vegas and 24–9 against the Chargers, after an 18–16 loss to Arizona. Over those three games, they averaged 25.0 points and allowed 16.0. Those are positive results, not a guarantee that the next performance will be smooth. [2]
My concern from watching the Rams is that even some wins have felt harder than the final score suggests. I want more consistent production from an offense with Matthew Stafford and Puka Nacua before treating a road spread like this as straightforward.
Personnel also matters. The Rams’ October 30 reporting described Myles Garrett’s absence since going on injured reserve after Week 1, along with Poona Ford’s season-ending injury and Kobie Turner’s multiweek absence. That report does not establish a Garrett return date for this matchup. [4]
The November 1 team recap also reported shoulder and back injuries to Jaylen Watson and Trent McDuffie, respectively. Their final availability against Washington was not established by that game report. A defense’s season numbers are less reassuring when the available lineup may be different. [5]
Washington has a real counterargument
The Commanders are plus seven in turnover differential; the Rams are minus four. That means Washington has seven more takeaways than giveaways, while Los Angeles has four fewer. Extra possessions can change a game like this, although a past turnover advantage is not a promise of future takeaways. [2–3]
Washington has also been competitive more often than its record alone might suggest. Its last three actual games were a 27–27 tie with the Giants, a 23–17 loss at San Francisco and a 27–10 win over Philadelphia. The bye is not included as a game. [3]
Daniels is the reason I cannot dismiss the Commanders’ ceiling. My view is that he can take their offense to a different level. The question is whether Washington can sustain that play and avoid the breakdowns that have undermined it.
Washington’s run defense also deserves respect: it allows 3.9 yards per carry. Los Angeles cannot simply assume the ground game will control everything while the passing attack takes the afternoon off. [3]
The pick
I’m staying with Los Angeles -5.5. My expectation is that the Rams’ third-down and red-zone advantages will show up, and Washington’s defense will struggle to produce enough stops.
The hesitation is genuine. If Daniels lifts Washington’s offense and the turnover battle favors the Commanders, this could become exactly the close road game I’m worried about. A convincing Rams win would strengthen my doubts about Washington’s playoff outlook; it would not, by itself, establish mathematical elimination. A Washington win would force me to reassess.
