The Giants are adding J.J. McCarthy after losing Jaxson Dart for the season. Minnesota announced Monday that it is sending the former first-round quarterback to New York for a 2027 fifth-round pick. The trade is pending McCarthy passing a physical.
That is a notable addition to the quarterback room, but the price and the reported role matter. Jordan Schultz reports that the Giants view McCarthy as depth behind Jameis Winston. Acquiring him does not, by itself, mean New York is changing its starter.
Why this fit is interesting
Mike Garafolo raised the on-field question that makes this more than a routine depth move. In his assessment, the Giants' offense has more in common with the run-oriented approach McCarthy played in at Michigan. Garafolo also pointed to John Harbaugh and his staff discussing the value of a mobile quarterback.
There is a connection worth watching there. McCarthy could arrive in an offense that asks him to do some familiar things. But familiarity with an approach does not answer how he will handle the passing game, how quickly he will learn the Giants' version of it, or whether he will get meaningful playing time. A possible fit and an established role are different claims.
The price and the production
McCarthy was the No. 10 pick in the 2024 draft, but his recent NFL production gives this move a more complicated backdrop. In 10 starts for Minnesota in 2025, he completed 140 of 243 passes for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, according to the Vikings. He missed his rookie season with a knee injury and later missed five games in 2025 with a high ankle sprain.
Those numbers do not settle what he can become. They do show why New York is acquiring a quarterback with development still ahead of him, rather than a proven answer to Dart's absence. A future fifth-round pick is a relatively modest trade cost for a former top-10 selection, but the value of the move depends on the role he can actually fill.
For now, the Giants have added an option at a specific price. Schultz's reporting points to a backup role behind Winston. Garafolo's analysis gives us a reason to watch the scheme fit. The physical, the depth chart and McCarthy's play will determine whether this becomes useful insurance or something bigger.
