Bills vs. Vikings Betting Preview: Why I’m Taking Buffalo -3 Despite the Risk

Game date: November 9, 2026 · 8:15 p.m. EST

Bills–Vikings betting preview

I’m taking Buffalo -3 against Minnesota, but this is one of my more hesitant selections. The question I keep coming back to is which Josh Allen performance we get. His best football can put pressure on a defense that has carried the Vikings. His mistakes could give Minnesota exactly the extra possessions it needs.

Both teams enter 6–1. They meet Monday, November 9, at 8:15 p.m. EST at U.S. Bank Stadium. ESPN’s DraftKings feed retrieved at 3:01 p.m. EST on November 2 listed Bills -3 at -112 and a total of 46.5. Those are dated prices, not guaranteed availability. I’m selecting Buffalo, not the total. A three-point Bills victory would push -3 under standard full-game spread rules. [1]

Why Buffalo is the pick

The Bills average 393.1 net yards and 6.1 yards per play through seven games. Minnesota averages 279.4 yards and 4.5 per play. Buffalo also converts 44.2% of third downs, compared with the Vikings’ 36.0%. [2–3]

That production gap is the reason I can see Buffalo making this uncomfortable for Minnesota. My preferred script is Allen playing efficiently, extending drives and creating enough offense that the Vikings cannot simply rely on another low-scoring defensive win.

Buffalo has won its last three: 37–34 in overtime at the Rams, 33–30 at Las Vegas and 36–10 against Baltimore. That is 35.3 points per game over the three-game stretch. The overtime game and different opponents matter, so I’m not treating that average as a forecast. [4]

The Bills also have ways to threaten without asking Allen to throw every down. Their season rushing production is 148.4 yards per game. James Cook has 707 rushing yards, and Allen has added 270. That gives Buffalo more than one way to test Minnesota’s defense. [2]

Minnesota’s defense is the reason to hesitate

The Vikings allow 271.6 net yards and 4.5 yards per play. Opponents have converted just 27 of 91 third-down attempts, or 29.7%. Those are substantial reasons not to assume Buffalo’s offense will operate normally. [3]

Minnesota is also plus seven in turnover margin, compared with Buffalo’s minus two. That means the Vikings have seven more takeaways than giveaways; the Bills have two fewer. It explains part of the contrast in their results without guaranteeing who wins the turnover battle Monday. [2–3]

My biggest worry is that Allen gives Minnesota short fields or easy points. Against a team built around its defense, those possessions can change what is required from the offense. If the Vikings do not need to drive the length of the field repeatedly, their season production becomes less of a limitation.

That is also why I don’t see this as a simple “good offense beats good defense” pick. Minnesota can create the kind of game Buffalo does not want.

Buffalo’s defense still has questions

The Bills allow 352.1 net yards per game and 5.2 yards per play. The Ravens’ ten points on November 1 do not prove those concerns disappeared: Baltimore lost Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley during that game. [2,5]

Buffalo won comfortably, and that win counts. But projecting the same defensive performance against a different quarterback situation would ignore important context.

Minnesota’s last three results were a 23–13 win at New Orleans, a 16–10 win over Indianapolis and a 19–15 loss at Detroit. The Vikings averaged 18.0 points and allowed 14.0 in those games. These were competitive outcomes, not evidence that Minnesota cannot win against a more explosive opponent. [6]

Detroit did expose one potential route for Buffalo by rushing for 230 yards against Minnesota. That is one game, not a verdict that the Vikings’ run defense is broken. Cook and Allen still have to earn their production. [7]

Murray’s health needs a fresh check

Minnesota’s official account of the Detroit game reported that Kevin O’Connell said Kyler Murray experienced hamstring tightness during the game. That supports monitoring the situation, but it does not establish a diagnosed strain or his November 9 status. [8]

Murray finished 17 of 29 for 210 passing yards, two touchdowns and an interception against Detroit. The Vikings had 266 total yards and converted three of ten third downs. Their ability to sustain offense matters if Buffalo starts scoring quickly. [7]

The pick, with the uncertainty intact

I’m staying with Bills -3 because I’m backing Allen’s ability to produce the kind of performance that forces Minnesota beyond its preferred pace. That is an expectation, not a guarantee that an excellent Allen game automatically means a cover.

The hesitation is real. Buffalo’s turnovers and defensive issues could make Minnesota’s offense look much better than its averages. Prime-time scheduling does not create an edge, and this is not a matchup where I’m pretending the outcome is obvious.

If Minnesota wins, I will be more impressed with the Vikings even if Allen’s mistakes play a major role. Responding to the Detroit loss by beating Buffalo would be meaningful evidence that their approach can hold up against this kind of opponent.
