NFL WEEK 2 · THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL

Lions’ Defensive Breakdowns Waste Second-Half Response in 41–31 Loss to Bills

Detroit Lions at Buffalo Bills · September 17, 2026

FINAL · COVERAGE COMPLETE

Buffalo Bills 41, Detroit Lions 31

Detroit’s second-half offense gave the Lions a chance, but it could not erase the defensive breakdowns and costly penalties that defined the night. Josh Allen’s legs were a major problem, while Buffalo’s pass rush and tipped passes repeatedly disrupted Goff. The response through Goff, Gibbs, Amon-Ra and LaPorta was encouraging; the missed opportunities and failure to get enough stops were not. Buffalo won 41–31, and both of my Detroit spreads lost.

Verified final numbers

  • Josh Allen: 20-of-31 passing, 248 yards, three passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns.
  • Jared Goff: 327 passing yards and four touchdown passes.
  • Amon-Ra St. Brown: nine receptions, 142 yards and two touchdowns.

Keon Coleman returned after briefly leaving with an apparent ankle injury. No confirmed diagnosis is asserted here.

Final-score and statistics update from published reports; the live reactions below preserve my observations as the game unfolded.

My betting results

  • Lions +3.5 (-108), $10 / 1u: Loss, -$10 / -1u.
  • Lions +7.5 (-118), $10 / 1u, 50% profit boost: Loss, -$10 / -1u.

Detroit lost by 10, so neither spread covered. The boost adds no payout to a losing wager. Combined: 0–2, -$20 / -2u, $20 settled risk, -100% game ROI.

Keon Coleman Is Starting to Look Better

My last live note: I feel Keon Coleman is starting to look better as the game progresses.

Lions Go Three-and-Out as Two More Passes Are Tipped

The Lions immediately go three-and-out. Goff has two more passes tipped at the line, and Detroit wastes its chance to make this a one-possession game.

Allen’s Legs Have Been Key for Buffalo

Josh Allen’s legs have been a major part of Buffalo’s offensive success in this game. His rushing has given Detroit real problems.

Bills Punt Gives Detroit a Real Chance

Buffalo has to punt. The Lions get the stop they needed and now have a real chance to make this a one-possession game.

Lions Respond With a Touchdown, Need a Quick Stop

The Lions respond with a great touchdown drive, helped by Bills penalties. Detroit needs a quick defensive stop to have a chance.

Bills Answer With a Long Touchdown Drive

Buffalo puts together a long, methodical drive and scores a touchdown. After Detroit’s best drive of the night, the Bills answer right back. It feels like this game is over.

Detroit’s Best Drive Ends With an Amon-Ra Touchdown

The Lions start the second half with a massive drive. A big third-down conversion to LaPorta helps keep it going, and Amon-Ra makes multiple catches before scoring the touchdown to cap it off. Detroit’s best drive of the night.

Halftime: Bills 27, Lions 10

The half ends with a Lions field goal. Buffalo leads 27–10. A really bad half for Detroit—the Lions need a touchdown right away to start the second half if they want to make this a game.

Lions Get the Ball Back With 49 Seconds

Detroit somehow gets the ball back with 49 seconds remaining. Lots of questions about Josh Allen’s decisions on that drive—it feels like Buffalo should have made the Lions use their timeouts.

Keon Coleman Returns

Keon Coleman is back in the game after the earlier injury scare.

Keon Coleman Goes Down Injured

Keon Coleman goes down injured on a brutal-looking play. It looked to me like something with his ankle, but the injury type and severity are unconfirmed.

False Start and Big Sack Kill Detroit’s Drive

A false start kills Detroit’s drive. Third-and-inches becomes third-and-5, and then Goff takes a big sack. Buffalo is getting the ball back.

Bills Pass Rush Looks Good

Buffalo’s pass rush looks good. They’re making things difficult for Goff and Detroit’s offense.

Josh Allen Keeps Rolling as Detroit Gives Up Another Touchdown

The Lions give up another touchdown. Josh Allen is rolling, and Detroit’s defense has been horrible. After the offense finally responded, the defense gives up another score.

Lions Finally Score Behind Big Plays From Gibbs and Goff

The Lions finally score, with huge plays from Gibbs and Goff on the drive. Detroit needs a lot more of that going forward.

Bills Score Another Touchdown

Buffalo scores another touchdown. Detroit’s defense continues to struggle, and this start keeps getting worse.

Another Defensive Holding Call

Another defensive holding call on the Lions. A penalty already wiped out an interception, and now another flag. Detroit keeps hurting itself.

Penalty Wipes Out a Lions Interception

A penalty wipes out a Lions interception, taking away a chance for Detroit’s defense to turn the game around.

Promising Lions Drive Completely Falls Apart

The Lions start the drive promisingly, then completely fall apart. Goff fumbles on a sack, and then the ball is snapped over his head. He also misses a wide-open Jameson Williams for a touchdown.

Detroit Has Negative Five Yards

The Lions have NEGATIVE FIVE YARDS right now. The offense is going nowhere, and the defense is giving up wide-open touchdowns. Horrible start for Detroit.

Wide-Open Touchdown on Third-and-11

Lions give up a WIDE-OPEN touchdown on third-and-11. Just a completely unacceptable play by Detroit’s defense.

Rough Opening Drive for Detroit

Rough opening drive for the Lions. Goff takes a sack, and Detroit fails to pick up a first down.

Josh Allen Dominates the Opening Drive

Josh Allen DOMINATED that opening drive. He rushed for 40 yards and finished with a rushing touchdown. The Lions had no answer for him early.

Lions Defense Struggles Early

Lions defense looks bad so far. The Bills are moving down the field way too easily.

My pregame outlook: why I’m backing Detroit

Buffalo is a roller coaster. I think this is the perfect spot to back Detroit with the points.

The Lions barely beat the Saints, and my read is that everybody is down on Detroit while everybody loves Buffalo.

I think the Bills defense is shaky, and Detroit can take advantage rather than just hang on.
